The view from the backyard...

My website will mostly be about my emigration from Texas in the United States to the Republic of Panama. I was 70 years old in October 2007 and this is why I've named my site "The Last Hurrah".

I love travel and I love adventure. (Within reason.)
And, more than that, I need a change from the U.S. I love new places and new faces.

Panama is a beautiful country. I have applied for a pensionado visa and I have received it. It allows me to remain in the country indefinitely and is renewable every year as long as I can prove that I have a monthly income of at least $500.  I receive a discount on medical expenses, eating out, movies, bus fare, airline fare within the country. The same as Panamanian retirees receive.

In early February 2007, my son and daughter and I spent two weeks in the mountains of Chiriqui province in Panama. While here my daughter bought a little A-frame house which needs some renovation. We have completed some of this renovation this past year. My son and his wife and I have been living in the little casa since April 2007. Although all the renovation is not yet complete, little by little, we've made it fairly comfortable. We have bought a car so it is easier to get around. I have adopted two rescue dogs. I adopted the first one, Lucy, a black Belgian Shepherd in June of 2007. The second one, Chambo, I adopted in March 2008.

I am studying the Spanish language on my own (with only marginal success). I'll just have to apply myself more. There are a few blogs here as well as picture albums about our life in the highlands of Chiriqui.

I hope you enjoy your visit!
